Nationals make SportsCenter on back-to-back nights

Hunter Hemenway and Christian Turner get the honor after stellar catches

WILLIAMSPORT — Gresham all-stars spent back-to-back days getting famous after earning spots in SportsCenter’s Top-10 Plays.

The first honor went to third baseman Hunter Hemenway, who snagged a sharp line drive for the final out of an inning against New Castle, Ind., earning a high-five from the opposing coach as he trotted off the field.

“It hit my palm, and I felt the ball roll up my glove,” Hemenway said. “I started looking around for it when I realized it was still there.”

Hemenway hasn’t seen the ESPN telecast of his highlight yet — not despite putting in the effort.

“I went to the pool after the game, when I came back to the dorm my dad (coach Craig Hemenway) told me I was on top-10,” Hunter said. “I watched ESPN the whole rest of the night, but didn’t see it. The next morning I woke up and turned it on again, but they had a new set of plays by then.”

On Saturday night, it was Christian Turner’s turn to make the national highlight show with a diving catch in right field against Parsippany that ended with him racing across the grass to chest bump teammate Devon Bratcher in celebration.

The catch provided the second out and helped Gresham keep their New Jersey foes off the scoreboard in the third inning.
