Central Catholic overwhelms Gophers in a three-game sweep

Gresham ends the week in fourth place after back-to-back losses to the leagues private schools

PORTLAND — Gresham’s volleyball team mustered some fight in the third set, but it wasn’t enough to extend their night during a sweep at the hands of No. 3-ranked Central Catholic on Thursday night.

The Gophers cut the deficit to a single point twice midway through the final set. The first came on a three-point surge by Haley Crouser, capped by a service ace into the back corner. The next came when Central sent an attack wide, bringing Gresham within 12-11.

But the Rams maintained their edge with a cross-court kill by Whitney Turner and eventually opened up a comfortable five-point cushion.

Central closed out the match when Kailee Johnson smothered the center of the net on back-to-back points before an off-balance Gresham return sailed wide out of play.

The Rams scored a 25-14, 25-11, 25-18 sweep to move to 5-0 in league play, while Gresham (2-2) is tied for fourth place early in the season.
