Big second half sends Scots to win in league opener

Samson Ebukams 45-yard touchdown run powers David Douglas past Centennial 39-21

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - A crowd of David Douglas defenders bury Centennial fullback Nick Schoebel during the Scots 39-21 win Friday night.

PORTLAND — Centennial buried itself in a hole with three first-half turnovers Friday night, and David Douglas kept shoveling on the dirt with scores on its first three drives of the second half to seal a 39-21 win.

The Scots started to pull away by going the length of the field in only five plays to start the second half. Halfback Andre Reasno got the ball rolling with a 24-yard scamper around the left side, and QB Tim Patrick finished the drive with a 10-yard dash to the end zone for a 27-14 lead.

David Douglas got the ball back quickly when Jerome Massad broke through the line and sacked Centennial QB Caleb Miller on 3rd-and-5.

“We had a good read on their plays by the second half, and wanted to get pressure on the quarterback and force him to get rid of the ball,” Massad said.

David Douglas didn’t take long to find the end zone again. This time it was a hand-off to Samson Ebukam, who charged through a crowd in the middle of the field before breaking free. Centennial’s A.J. Wienke managed to grab hold of his jersey at the 15-yard line, but Ebukam tore loose to finish the play.

“I remembered back to practice and our coaches saying never let one guy tackle you,” Ebukam said. “I thought to myself ‘I can’t let you do it, I’m this close.’”

The touchdown put the Scots in command 33-14 midway through the third quarter.

The game marked the start of the Mount Hood Conference season.

David Douglas (2-2) hosts Barlow (0-4) for its homecoming game next Friday, while Centennial (1-3) travels to Gresham (4-0), which will be honoring the 30-year anniversary of its 1982 state championship team.
