Barlow D makes goal line stand to beat Scots

A blocked field goal in the final minutes secures the Bruins 14-12 win

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Barlow punter Zach Standish lets loose with a kick in the fourth quarter of Fridays 14-12 win over David Douglas. His two extra points proved to be the difference.

PORTLAND — Barlow’s defense rose to the challenge Friday night, making a goal-line stand in the final minutes to close out a 14-12 win at David Douglas.

The Scots moved inside the 10-yard line with less than five minutes to play. David Douglas tried to sneak into the end zone on a QB draw by Tim Patrick, but Barlow linebacker Cole Holmlund held his ground in the middle of the field and pulled him down at the 2-yard line.

Confusion hit the David Douglas huddle as it prepared for third down, and coach Dan Wood had to call timeout to get the correct group of players on the field — a timeout that would prove costly a few minutes later.

With one more chance to reach the end zone, the Scots had halfback Andre Reasno take the shotgun snap before dashing to his right looking for an alley to pay dirt. He only made it a few steps before Bruins linebacker Will Leenders crashed into his legs and dropped him for a 5-yard loss.

David Douglas wouldn’t be scoring a touchdown, but it was perfectly lined up with the ball between the hash marks for a short 22-yard field goal to take the lead.

The Scots kicker never got the chance, as Holmlund exploded through the middle and dived forward to block the kick with his chest.

“The coaches taught me to wait for the center to lift up, then jump through,” Holmlund said. “I went as hard as I could and hoped for the best.”

Barlow took possession but was unable to pick up a first down, giving the Scots one final chance with 2:14 on the clock. That chance lasted one play, as Barlow’s Ty Haggerty dropped into coverage and picked off a pass in the middle of the field to clinch the Bruins first win of the season.
