Bruins score a sweep over the Blues

A big comeback in the first set powers Barlow to the win

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Barlow middle blocker Cassidy Winters prepares for a St. Marys attack during Thursdays three-set sweep.

Barlow’s volleyball team picked up a sweep over St. Mary’s on Thursday night to move into the top half of the Mount Hood Conference standings.

The Bruins overcame an 18-12 deficit in the first set, finishing strong with a 10-point service run by Danelle Woodcock. Brynna Dougharity’s kill down the line put Barlow in front, and a series of St. Mary’s errors gave Barlow the set 25-19.

The teams traded the lead three times early in the second set before Barlow took command late. The highlight came when Madi Gardner stretched out for a one-armed dig at the 10-foot-line, while setter Kaylee Ree popped the ball out of the net floating it high over the middle. Barlow’s Cassidy Winters was first off her feet and blocked the ball over to the other side.

St. Mary’s was called for a lift trying to retrieve the ball, giving Barlow the point and a 21-18 lead.

Kassy Tuma finished off the set 25-19 with an ace that clipped off the arms of two St. Mary’s players.

Barlow was unchallenged in the third set, taking it by a 25-5 count.

The win puts Barlow (5-3) in a tie with the Blues for third place in the MHC, although the Bruins swept the season series between the teams surrendering just one set in the two matches.
