Mt. Hood stays unbeaten in South Region play

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Mt. Hood CC setter Alyssa Hall celebrates a point during the Saints three-set sweep over Umpqua on Friday night.

The Mt. Hood CC volleyball team continued to dominate the South Region, moving to 6-0 in league matches with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-21 sweep over Umpqua on Friday night.

The Saints survived a tough opening set, which saw them fall behind by five points at two different stages before rushing back down the stretch. Mt. Hood pulled even at 22 when Maycee Abendschein pounded a kill hard off an Umpqua block and out of play.

The Saints moved ahead for good on the next volley when Tori Kemper made a diving save in the front row, and Umpqua’s next attack went wide. Mt. Hood’s Kylie Kitzmiller squeezed a kill through a Riverhawks’ block to bring up set point, which ended with Umpqua sending a low ball into the net.

The Saints maintained a slim lead throughout the second set, pulling away late when Charlene Manning scored back-to-back points with a tip shot, followed by a solid block in the middle.

The Saints host SW Oregon at 1 p.m. Saturday before traveling to Albany to face second-place Linn-Benton on Wednesday.

Mt. Hood hosts its annual Dorian Harris Classic tournament next weekend.
