Corbett sweeps Warrenton, takes top ranking into the 3A playoffs

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Corbetts Claire Davis, 6, and Jina Kalberg put up a block during Thursdays three-set sweep over West Division champion Warrenton.

CORBETT — Thursday night’s Lewis & Clark League volleyball championship match had all of the suspense of a mayor running unopposed for re-election. The result was clear before the match even started, but the points still had to be counted before Corbett could officially hoist the trophy.

The Cardinals needed less than an hour to sweep aside a Warrenton squad that struggled just to reach double digits in the 25-11, 25-10, 25-8 loss.

Corbett closed out the championship match with Karina Lees serving a five-point spurt for a quick 11-3 lead. Jina Kalberg put up a pair of blocks during the run and Claire Davis ended the longest volley of the night with a tip shot from the right side.

The No. 1-ranked Cardinals improved to 22-4 with the win and as league champs have earned an automatic spot in the 3A state bracket.

Corbett travels to Banks for a playoff tuneup match at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Braves (19-4) are ranked No. 4 at the 4A level.

Look for extended match coverage in the Tuesday, Oct. 30, print edition.
