King of the spear throwers

by: SANDY POST: DAVID BALL - Estacada High graduate Tyler Callahan improved on his personal best in the javelin with each of his six attempts at last months Northwest championship meet. He won with a heave of 235 feet, which is the best junior college mark in the nation this season. Tyler Callahan finished his time with the Mt. Hood Community College track team with a bang last month at the Northwest junior college championship meet.

Callahan won the javelin title in dominating fashion, moving to the top of the leader board on his first attempt despite taking a cautious shortened approach to ensure he got an official mark.

“When I saw that one go out there, I knew I was going to have a good day,” Callahan said.

The spear came down around the 213-foot mark. The runner-up in the competition threw 210-9.

But Callahan wasn’t ready to rest on his laurels despite having first place all by clinched.

He improved his mark on each of his attempts, going a school record 235 feet on his fifth try. It is the best junior college mark in the nation this season and ranks 20th at all collegiate levels.

“Every single one I threw was a new personal best,” Callahan said. “They just kept getting better and better.”

That was no different on his sixth and final throw when he sped down the runway and fired the spear out past the 240 line. He stumbled over the foul line on the runway to cancel out the throw, but athletes in the area clamored for the mark to be measured anyway. It came in at an unofficial 241-5.

“I had so much energy going forward, and my leg just couldn’t handle it,” Callahan said.

He has been on the radar of various four-year colleges all spring, but the big effort in the year’s showcase meet resulted in a phone call from the University of Oregon.

Callahan has yet to decide where he will land in the fall.

“That whole series of throws just felt awesome, and it’s given me some more options going forward,” Callahan said.
