MHC SWIMMING - Bruins finish fourth in the 6A team standings
by: David Ball Barlow sophomore Nick Thorne splashes forward in the 200-yard medley. He won the race with a comeback on the final lap Saturday at the 6A state meet.

The Barlow boys only had five swimmers get wet Saturday, but the Bruins piled up some big points in their handful of races and left the 6A state meet with the fourth-place trophy.

Sophomore Nick Thorne highlighted the charge with two wins, starting with perhaps the most exciting race of the day - the 200-yard medley where he out dueled Sunset's Cole Hurwitz to win in 1:53.94. The two traded the lead three times during the four-lap race with Thorne moving in front to stay late in the freestyle leg, touching in .22 hundredths ahead. Henry Fellows of Grant, the top qualifier, finished a distant third.

'I hit the last wall well, and I really picked it up,' Thorne said. 'I kind of thought I had it at that point.'

Thorne added a second victory in the 100 freestyle (46.29), taking out much of the suspense early and coming to the wall almost a full second ahead of the field.
