Mt. Hood needs little more than an hour to get through the second round

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Mt. Hoods Xayna Robinson goes on the attack during Fridays second-round sweep over Lower Columbia.TROUTDALE — The Mt. Hood CC volleyball team zipped to a 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 win over the Red Devils to claim the only sweep of Friday’s second-round action.

The Saints didn’t face any real challenges, building quick leads in each set and carrying them through to the finish.

Lower Columbia overcame a series of set points in the opening set and still had some fight left with Shaina Gustafson getting in the way of two heavy blasts on the right side. Mt. Hood’s Lihau Perreira avoided that side of the court on the next attack, sending a clean winner down the sideline to claim the opener 25-22.

The Red Devils started the middle set by sending a serve into the net.

It wouldn’t get any better.

Lower Columbia suffered first-serve sideouts on its first four opportunities and quickly lost touch 11-3.

The Saints were firing on all cylinders in the third set, building a 20-11 lead when Shea Lindsey set a ball across the front row and Perreira flew onto the scene for a powerful putaway.

The Saints play North champ Olympic in the winner’s-bracket semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
