Damascus goes cold down the stretch in loss to Ione

by: David Ball Damascus Christian senior Eric Rauch turns upcourt during Wednesday's playoff loss to Ione. He hit four 3-pointers on the night and led the Eagles with 16 points.

Damascus Christian guard Austin Wood scooped up the loose ball along the sideline, dribbled in front of a the screaming crowd in the bleachers and beat Ione's last defender downcourt for a layin. It was the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, and the basket put the host Eagles in front 38-35.

Damascus wouldn't score again until the final seconds of the 1A state playoff game, as Ione rushed back to end the Eagles season 53-40.

The Cardinals started to put the game out of reach when Evan Rietmann stole and inbounds pass under the basket and went straight up for a layin, followed by Luke Jobes swishing a 3 for a 45-38 lead as the clock rolled under four minutes.

Damascus tried to answer, but couldn't get a shot to fall at their end of the court....
