Central Catholic wins the showdown for second place in the MHC

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Centennial point guard Melissa Dailey makes a move to the basket during Thursdays 49-44 loss at Central Catholic.PORTLAND — The Centennial girls basketball team made a wild rush in the second half, but couldn’t get over the hump during a 49-44 loss Thursday night at Central Catholic.

After making just four shots in the first half, the Eagles battled back from a double-digit deficit to tie the score 41-41 with 2:30 to play when Melissa Dailey took a steal, dribbled into the lane and twisted her body to get a shot over the top of Central guard Zharia Hale.

The deadlock would only last 10 seconds, as Rams’ center Jerusha Paine got loose underneath for a three-point play. On the team’s next possession, she grabbed a rebound off a teammate’s missed free throw and went right back up for two points and a commanding 46-41 lead as the clock ticked down to a minute left.

The win puts Central (9-9) into second place in the Mount Hood Conference, while Centennial (10-9) falls into a tie with Barlow for third. The top three finishers advance to the 6A state playoffs.
