Corbett girls advance to league title game

The Cardinals fly past Portland Adventist in the league playoffs

by: THE OUTLOOK: PARKER LEE - Corbetts Taylor Fritz reaches out to save a wayward pass from going out of bounds during Tuesdays 47-40 league playoff win over Portland Adventist. There was no shortage of flashy baskets for the Corbett girls’ basketball team as they hosted Portland Adventist in the Lewis and Clark League playoffs Tuesday. The plays the Cardinals made on the defensive side of the floor might not have been quite as highlight-reel worthy, but those were the ones that made the biggest impact.

Corbett held off the Cougars by making several crucial defensive stands in the second half to earn a 47-40 victory and a spot in Saturday’s league championship game at Valley Catholic.

“Teams in this league are good and they always make runs,” Corbett coach Chris Detherage said. “We have been fighting that all year, and we learned from it. We knew we had to step up on defense.”

The Cardinals took a six-point lead into halftime only to see Portland Adventist score back-to-back baskets coming out of the locker room to make it a one-possession game.

Corbett clamped down on defense and smothered the Cougars, who turned the ball over four times over the next two minutes sparking an 11-point spurt that helped Corbett put the game out of reach.
