Mt. Hood CC rides a fourth-inning scoring spurt to a 3-0 win over Chemeketa

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Mt. Hoods Logan Grindy celebrates the teams first run during Tuesday nights 3-0 home win over Chemeketa. The Mt. Hood CC baseball team needed a win Tuesday night and pitcher Joe Piercey delivered with a 3-0 shutout over Chemeketa.

Piercey scattered four hits and struck out four during his complete-game effort that gave the Saints a split in their home doubleheader.

Mt. Hood scored all of its runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Tommy Lane’s RBI-double that dropped in front of a diving center fielder.

Chemeketa had a chance to answer in the fifth when the Storm loaded the bases with no one out. But the opportunity was wasted with a strikeout and an infield pop-up, setting the stage for Mt. Hood third baseman Kody Matthews gloved a one-hopper and threw across the infield for the final out.

The Saints held a 6-2 lead late in the first game before giving up five runs over the final three innings to lose 7-6.

Mt. Hood takes on the top two teams in the South Region this weekend with a doubleheader at Lane on Friday, followed by a twin bill at Clark on Saturday.
