by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Gresham senior Brian Salgado came within inches of the lead on his final throw of the preliminaries Friday morning. Gresham senior Brian Salgado settled for second place in the boys shot put at the 6A state meet this morning.

The field was chasing Jesuit’s Henry Mondeaux from the start, as he set the bar with a first-round heave of 56-feet-10-inches. Salgado came within inches of catching him with a throw of 56-6 1/4 to wrap up prelims, but that proved to be his best of the day, which held off Centennial’s Charlie Button by almost a foot for runner-up honors.

Gresham’s Ken Onyima (fifth, 51-1) and Centennial’s Chuckie Bessette (seventh, 50-3) also found spots on the awards stand.

In other early finals, Reynolds’ Andy Pham finished eighth in the long jump with a best of 20-4 3/4 coming on his first trip down the runway. He was one of four competitors not to foul a single attempt, stretching out past 19 feet on each of his six jumps.
