Jesuit pours on 97 points to claim the team crown
EUGENE David Douglas junior Joshua Kellebrew turned off the after burners when the starting gun sounded and never let off during a win in the much-anticipated 800-meter final at Saturdays 6A state track meet.
Kellebrew shot out into the lead right away and stayed several strides ahead of the pack throughout the first lap. McMinnvilles Nic McDaniel made his move on the backstretch, but Kellebrew regained the lead early on the final turn.
I didnt panic, I just stayed right behind him and waited, Kellebrew said. He started slowing up at the 200 mark, so I made my move right there. I think I made the right choice.
Kellebrew zipped away unchallenged, crossing through the finish line in 1:53.34 several strides ahead of Lincolns Josiah Langstaff. McDaniel faded all the way to the back of the pack.
Centennials Thomas Morrell III moved into second place for a few moments late in the race before giving way to Langstaff coming off the final turn.
Jesuit ran away with the team title with 97 points, while Central Catholic was the top MHC team, placing 10th overall with 24.5 points.
Due to an early Memorial Day deadline, full coverage of the state meet will appear in the Friday, May 30, print edition.
