Westview gets past Bruins in quarterfinals

The Wildcats score the game's only run in the fifth inning

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Barlow's Morgan Bratcher keeps her eye on the catcher while setting up at first base during Friday's 1-0 loss to Westview. Barlow’s softball season came to an end in Friday’s quarterfinals with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to visiting Westview.

The Bruins had a chance to get on the scoreboard first when Kaylee Ree blasted a triple off the right-field fence in the third inning. Two batters later, she aggressively left the bag and drew a throw from Westview catcher Katie Whetstine. With the ball in the air, Ree broke for the plate, but the Wildcats relayed the ball home in time for Whetstine to apply the tag that kept the game scoreless.

Westview broke through in the fifth inning, putting up the game’s only run on Kylie Alto’s RBI-double into center field. The Bruins escaped further damage when Meagan Bratcher fielded a ground ball and pitcher Nena Dudley tossed a strikeout to freeze Alto at third base.

Down to their final at-bats, Barlow nearly forced extra innings when Katie Powers sent a ball over the fence, but the shot curved about 15 feet wide of the foul pole in left field.

Westview advances to face No. 1 North Medford in Tuesday’s semifinal, while South Medford faces No. 2 South Salem in the other half of the bracket. South Medford entered the playoffs ranked No. 30 in the RPI, but has pulled off upsets over top-10 foes Tualatin and Glencoe to keep its season alive.
