The Gresham-Barlow School District board held a meeting Monday to vote on contingency plans for operations of schools during the potential teachers strike, which would begin April 25. The board voted to continue varsity athletics while discontinuing jayvee and freshmen athletics for the duration of the work stoppage.
In the event of a teachers strike, coaches who are also teachers would no longer be allowed to coach without crossing the picket line.
The director of secondary education for the school district, James Hiu, says roughly 40-60 percent of current coaches in the district are also teachers, however, the school board is in the process of determining exactly how many coaches will be available during the potential strike.
It has been established that the loss would require instructors from JV and freshmen programs to assist at the varsity level, leaving the younger squads without enough coaches.
