Gresham all-stars run through district tourney


Gophers open the state playoffs at 11 a.m. Friday at Alpenrose Dairy

CLACKAMAS — The Gresham all-stars finished a dominating run through the majors (ages 11-12) district Little League tournament with a 12-2 win over Reynolds in Saturday’s title game — the team’s fourth mercy-rule victory in as many tries.

The Gophers broke into the lead on a Trevor Bless two-run homer in the first inning.

Gresham expanded the margin to 8-1 in the second inning, putting seven of its first eight runners on base. The Gophers closed out the game on the 10-run rule in its half of the fourth after Reece McKenzie sent a two-run double to deep center field.

The Gophers advance to the majors state tournament where they will play the opening game at 11 a.m. Friday at Alpenrose dairy. The double-elimination playoffs continue through the weekend with the title game set for 5 p.m. Thursday, July 24.
