OREGON CITY — Gresham's baseball team turned back a bases-loaded threat in the seventh inning to beat Oregon City 4-2 in the Mount Hood Conference finale Friday.

After seeing the Pioneers put the tying run on base in the seventh, Gresham reliever Hunter Hemenway struck out the final two batters, getting the last one looking at strike three to end the game.

"Once we got to two outs, you can forget about whoever's on the bases — you just do whatever it takes to get the batter out," Hemenway said. "I came to the mound throwing my best stuff to end the game."

Gresham was already locked into second place in the MHC coming into the day, but the win boosted the team to No. 8 in the final OSAA rankings, keeping the Gophers on their home field through the second round of the playoffs.

Much more was at stake for Oregon City, which missed a chance to secure a playoff spot and ended up in Tuesday's 6A qualifier games.

The game featured a rain delay in the third inning, just long enough to lay the tarp over the mound and peel it back off.

Another less traditional disruption to play came in the sixth when a squirrel appeared to break on the pitch and came bounding down the third-base line. The furry-tailed rodent pranced around the crowd at home plate before scampering under the fence near the visitor's dugout.
