Gresham's softball team survived some nervous early moments to blow past Cleveland 8-0 in the first round of the 6A playoffs Monday.
The visiting Warriors used two walks and a single by Marci Roberti to load the bases in the first inning only to see Gresham pitcher Shianne Smith find her groove and strike out the next two batters. Cleveland would strand seven runners over the first half of the game, unable to bring anyone across the plate.
The Gophers grew a 3-0 lead in the second inning helped along by a pair of Cleveland errors and a bases-loaded walk.
Gresham put the game out of reach 5-0 in the third on back-to-back RBI-singles through the middle from Portia Perkins and Kalie Anderson.
The No. 4-seed Gophers advance to host Beaverton, the Metro's fourth-place team, in the second round at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
