The Gresham GreyWolves started a sprint for the finish line with a much-needed 11-7 win in Bend to open a road series Wednesday night.

The GreyWolves never trailed in the game after Alec DeWattville connected for an RBI-single and came around to score himself on an Elks' error later in the first inning.

"That really set the tone for the rest of the game," Gresham coach Justin Barchus said. "There's always that question of finding your rhythm coming off the all-star break, but that got us going."

But it wasn't until the seventh that the GreyWolves would put their foot down. R.J. Tejeiro came up with an RBI-single, and Aaron Simpson connected on a bases-loaded hit that stretched the lead to 10-4 before Gresham had registered an out in the inning.

The win helped the GreyWolves (15-24) close the gap in the South Division second-half race, helped along by the top three teams in the division losing on the same night.

The GreyWolves return home to Mt. Hood Community College to start a three-game series with the Victoria Harbourcats at 6:35 p.m. Saturday. The 5:05 p.m. Sunday game is Youth Softball Night with all softball players (18-and-under) getting in free if they wear their team jersey. The promotion is a response to Victoria pitcher Claire Eccles — the only female player competing in the summer collegiate circuit.
