Crews visit showcases local schools

Hillsboro Schools will be a showcase for the state during an Oct. 10 visit from Oregon’s new chief education officer, Rudy Crew.

Named by Gov. John Kitzhaber in late May to oversee pre-kindergarten through college education, Crew is a big name in national education circles, known for his work as a reformer in New York as well as Sacramento, Miami and Tacoma.

This month he’ll travel to communities around Oregon to talk about his vision for education and hear about citizens’ expectations, questions and concerns.

The Oregon PTA will co-host the trip; his only stop in Washington County will be Hillsboro schools.

Crew will meet with local superintendents and school board representatives at Liberty High School the afternoon of Oct. 10, then speak at a town hall that night.

Citizens are invited to the public town hall set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Liberty High School auditorium, 21945 N.W. Wagon Way.

School superintendent hosts listening sessions

Hillsboro School Superintendent Mike Scott also wants to hear from people.

Next week he’ll kick off a series of listening sessions, for parents and community members to ask questions and hear about the district’s work underway. Upcoming sessions are set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 16; and noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 (a webinar).

Two more will be held next spring. For locations and more information, visit hsd.k12.or.us.
