Westside MAX restored

Update: Service resumes in time for evening commute

by: BEAVERTON POLICE DEPARTMENT - A worker inspect damage inside the MAX tunnel near the Beaverton Transit Center caused by an overnight car crash.Westside MAX service was restored in the late afternoon, just in time for the start of the evening rush hour.

TriMet officials cautioned commuters to expect delays because of the overnight accident that closed the tracks between Portland and Beaverton.

The accident occurred around 11:13 p.m. on Nov. 13 when a black BMW driven by Jeff John Robertson, 27, crashed onto the MAX tracks near the tunnel to the Sunset Transit Center from Highway 26 westbound.

When Beaverton police officers arrived at the scene, they saw the car on the westbound MAX tracks and a large portion of a tree on the eastbound MAX tracks. According to police, it appears that the BMW left the roadway when the driver attempted to take the Highway 217 southbound exit from Highway 26 westbound.

Although the car was removed from the tracks by around 5 a.m., the accident damaged the tracks and overhead power lines.

TriMet advised MAX riders to make alternative arrangements. Shuttle buses are serving MAX stops between the Galleria/Library in downtown Portland and the Beaverton Transit Center. Those going to and from the Portland International Airport need to plan for extra time.

Robertson has been arrested for Reckless Driving, DUII and Criminal Mischief 1.
