The 3D stop-action film by Sam Fell and Chris Butler was nominated Wednesday in the Best Animated Feature Film category. The Focus Features movie joins Disney’s “Brave,” “Frankenweenie” and “Wreck it Ralph,” and Sony Pictures’ “The Pirates! Band of Misfits,” competing for the Oscar.

It’s the first Academy Award nomination for Fell and Butler.

Laika Studios in Hillsboro made the film about a boy in a small Massachusetts town who can talk with ghosts. Norman Babcock must save his town from a centuries-old curse.

The film featured the voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Casey Affleck, Jeff Garlin, Tempest Bledsoe and John Goodman. It earned about $60 million at the box office, $14 million coming on its opening weekend in mid-August.

“Paranorman” is the second stop-action film made in 3D. The first was Laika’s “Coraline,” released in 2009.

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone will host the 85th Academy Awards show Feb. 24 from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
