Contractor honored for saving woman from fire

Clifford Pepper, a contractor and former volunteer firefighter, has been honored by the city for saving the life of an elderly women trapped inside her burning home last December.

Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey and Hillsboro Fire Chief Greg Nelson presented Pepper with the Citizen Life Saving Award and the Civilian Medal of Honor at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

“We are grateful to any and all persons who selflessly step in and come to the aid of a fellow citizen,” said Nelson.

Pepper was working at the Club 1201 Condominiums when he saw smoke and heard a smoke alarm just around the corner. He quickly dialed 9-1-1, went to the burning home, where he carried the elderly woman with mobility problems outside and waited with her until she was checked by Hillsboro fire medics.
