Century, Glencoe students win at state speech tourney


Century High School’s speech and debate team tied for fifth and Glencoe placed eighth overall in the state speech and debate championships held last weekend at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

Five Century students placed in the top three finishers in the state in individual categories.

Connor Daliposon won the memorized humorous interpretation category; Emily VanVleet placed second in oratory speaking, Victoria Conrad placed third in poetry reading; and Christian Geddes and Nick Carleson tied for third place in the Oregon style cross-examination debate.

For Glencoe, Brett Morgan placed third in extemporaneous speaking. The duo of Jacob Pavlik and Brett Morgan placed second in public forum debate, while Lorena Colcer and Hampus Hammarland ties for third place in the same category.

School board candidates to speak

Candidates for four open positions on the Hillsboro School Board — including Janeen Sollman, A. Richard Vial, Jamie Rodriguez, Miklosch “Mik” Sander, Glenn D. Miller, Monte Akers, Rebecca Lantz and Erik Seligman — have been invited to speak at two public events next week.

On Thursday, May 2, they’ll appear in a candidates’ forum at the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce, 5139 N.E. Elam Young Parkway, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in a forum co-hosted by the Hillsboro Tribune and the Hillsboro Argus.

Then, on Monday, May 6, the board hopefuls will speak at the Washington County Public Affairs Forum at Old Spaghetti Factory, 18925 N.W. Tanasbourne Dr. in Hillsboro. Doors open at 10:30 a.m.
