A fresh take on gin

Hillsboro Farmers Market welcomes new vendor this Sunday

The Hillsboro Farmers’ Markets in downtown Hillsboro and at Orenco Station opened last weekend to warm weather, happy crowds and lots of plants for the garden.

If you’re planning a garden party or other entertaining to take advantage of this particularly lovely weather, you’ll want to visit the Orenco Station Market this Sunday, May 12, to welcome an exciting new vendor to the market: Portland’s own House Spirits Distillery. The makers of Aviation Gin and Krogstad Aquavit have been featured in nationally distributed culinary publications like Imbibe, Food & Wine and Wine Enthusiast.

Small artisan distilleries have grown in popularity in recent years, often making unique spirits and liquors that resurrect long-forgotten recipes or invent wholly new styles. Aviation Gin is described as an “American Gin,” an emerging style of dry gin that strives for what House Spirits calls “botanical democracy” instead of the dominance of juniper found in many larger production gins. Recently, Wine Enthusiast rewarded this approach by giving Aviation Gin a 97 point rating.

House Spirits will be pouring small tastes and selling bottles of Aviation Gin, Krogstad Aquavit, Westward Whiskey, White Dog Whiskey, and coffee liqueur made with Stumptown Coffee beans at the Orenco Station Market, which is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on every Sunday, May through October.

Try Aviation Gin in a classic cocktail for a perfect spring sipper that’s a lovely shade of lilac.

Here’s the recipe: 1.5 ounces Aviation Gin; 1 tablespoon Crème de Violette; ½-ounce maraschino liqueur; ¾-ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice; simple syrup to taste. Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a cocktail cherry.
