Chamber announces its "stars"

Eleven individuals, organizations and businesses were singled out Thursday night during the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards Celebration.

The program allows the chamber to recognize businesses, individuals and organizations that have “significantly contributed to the greater Hillsboro area,” according to an event flier. Award winners for 2013 include:

Distinguished Youth — Noelani Gonzales: ASB president at Glencoe High School and charity fundraiser organizer.

Agricultural Achievement — Oregon Berry Packing: Third generation business contributes $3.5 million in taxable income to Washington County each year.

Professional of the Year — Matt Crile: Owner and principal broker of Windermere West in Hillsboro. Hillsboro Schools Foundation board member.

Volunteer of the Year — Janeen Sollman: Hillsboro Senior Center, Loaves & Fishes and Hillsboro Family Resource Center volunteer. Member of Hillsboro School Board.

First Responder Award — Ben Roby: Engineer and EMT-Paramedic for Hillsboro Fire Department. Selected as the 2012 Firefighter of the Year.

Organization of the Year — Pacific University: Partnered with Tuality Hospital, the city and Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center to form the Health and Education District.

Business of the Year — Pacific Landscape Management: Listed by Oregon Business Magazine as one of the area’s 100 Best Places to Work.

Robert Herb Leadership Award — Doug Johnson: Owner of Hillsboro Pharmacy. Helped establish Downtown Business Association. Served on Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce board.

Chairman’s Award — Aron Carleson: Executive director of Hillsboro Schools Foundation, president of the Hillsboro City Council and chairwoman of the Transportation Committee.

Philanthropic Leadership Award — Kurt and Mary Koehler: Founding board members of Hillsboro Schools Foundation. Contributed $25,000 toward the original endowment.

Emma C. McKinney Distinguished Citizen Award — Debbie Clarke: Hillsboro Library Board chairwoman helped lead $1 million capital campaign for the new Main Library building and remodeling of Shute Park Library.
