Former substitute teacher charged with sexual assault


A 40-year-old man arrested early Tuesday morning in connection with the June 8 assault of a student in a Portland State University elevator was a substitute teacher in the Hillsboro School District in 1999.

Nate Justin Wheeler was arrested at his Portland home about 3:40 a.m. Tuesday and lodged in the Multnomah County Jail. He faces a first-degree sexual assault charge for the attack at Neuberger Hall.

In 1999, Wheeler was licensed as a teacher and was employed as a substitute in the Hillsboro School District at J.B. Thomas Middle School. He resigned from the district in February 2001.

Five months later, he was convicted of delivery of controlled substances to a minor and third-degree sexual abuse in 2001. His teaching license was revoked in October 2001.

In 2006, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor invasion of privacy charge, and later that year pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

In 2012, he was convicted in Washington County of a misdemeanor for failing to register as a sex offender.
