Family escapes early morning fire

A Hillsboro family escaped unharmed from a house fire early Tuesday. The fire was reported to 911 dispatchers at 4:39 a.m. The first fire engine to arrive found the family safely outside with the north side of the structure in flames and heavy smoke coming through the eaves of the two-story home, at 1799 N.W. Ninth Avenue.

Homeowner Anthony Puckett told investigators he and his wife awoke to an unusual sound coming from outside their bedroom window. Puckett looked out to see the glow of fire and flames coming up the side of their two-story home. He quickly alerted the other four family members and evacuated the house while calling 911 from his cell phone.

No cause of the fire has been determined at this time. Estimated damage to the home is $150,000. No injuries were reported.
