Gala boosts theater ticket program

Hillsboro-based theater company Bag&Baggage’s TEN4ONE program — which provides free “on demand” tickets to live theater for any student from any Washington County High School — received a huge boost in mid-July during the company’s annual gala dinner and auction. by: COURTESY PHOTO - Bag&Baggage Productions artistic director Scott Palmer and new managing director Anne Mueller were happy to be part of the Hillsboro theatre companys annual gala July 13.

The event, held at the Garden Vineyard Farm in Helvetia, attracted nearly 140 guests and raised more than $50,000 to support the TEN4ONE program, according to Bag&Baggage artistic director Scott Palmer.

The theater company has managed the TEN4ONE program for the past five years, making thousands of free tickets available to students from participating schools. Those schools were previously limited to Hillsboro and western Washington County, but for the 2013-2014 season, the number of participating schools has nearly tripled and now includes every high school in the county, according to Palmer.

“The TEN4ONE program is simple,” he said. “Any student from a high school in Washington County simply shows up at the box office of The Venetian Theatre (253 E. Main St. in Hillsboro and the home of Bag&Baggage stage shows) prior to any performance and shows a valid student ID.”

They then receive a free ticket to that performance, said Palmer. With funds raised from the 2013 gala, Bag&Baggage will make 6,000 tickets available over the course of its five-performance season that begins in August with an all-female outdoor production of “Julius Caesar.”

The season also will include classic works such as “The Great Gatsby,” Noel Coward’s “Private Lives” and a North American premiere of Palmer’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”
