Maverick tracks down man

Corey Johnson chose the wrong Washington County Sheriff’s dog to run from.

Sheriff’s deputies pulled over a car driven by the 24-year-old Portland resident early on the morning of Aug. 10.

When Maverick, a drug-detecting member of the department’s K9 unit, alerted deputies there were drugs in the car, Johnson took off running — despite being handcuffed.

But as it turned out, Maverick is also trained as a tracker. He chased down Johnson, who was promptly arrested.

When deputies searched Johnson’s car, they found a small quantity of marijuana and a stolen handgun. He was charged with theft I, escape II, attempt to elude misdemeanor, theft III, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest and interfering with a peace officer.

Johnson was lodged at the Washington County Jail and held on $20,000 bail.
