Hillsboro police shoot at man brandishing pellet gun

Hillsboro police officers fired shots at a man armed with what later turned out to be a pellet gun Tuesday night.

No one was hurt in the incident. The Washington County Major Crimes Team is investigating the shooting.

Adam Havery Olsen, 33, was arrested and lodged in the Washington County Jail on charges of menacing, resisting arrest and interfering with peace officer.

Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated. Their names were not released.

Olsen might face additional charges.

According to the Hillsboro Police Department, at about 10:05 p.m. on Sept. 17, officers responded to a report of a man armed with a pistol threatening to harm himself at 1299 N.E. Orenco Station Parkway, No. A113. A woman, the only other occupant in the residence at the time, safely left the apartment before police arrived.

When the officers arrived they heard the man, identified as Olsen, make numerous threats to shoot them. The officers surrounded the apartment and attempted to negotiate with Olsen. Members of the Washington County Hostage Negotiation Team were called to the scene to help with the talks.

Police say that several minutes later, Olsen emerged from the back of the apartment into a breezeway armed with what appeared to be a pistol. After pointing the weapon at the police, two officers fired an unknown number of rounds at Olsen. No one was struck by the gunfire.

Shortly after the Washington County Tactical Negotiations Team responded to the apartment, Olsen emerged unarmed and was taken into custody at about 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Officers later discovered that the weapon Olsen pointed at police was a pellet gun that closely resembled a pistol.
