Now you can create the perfect home for a pet — in gingerbread.

The Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter is holding its second annual Gingerbread Dog House Contest.

Pet-themed gingerbread or decorated cake creations are eligible for the contest. Participants are encouraged to pre-register by Dec. 6 to secure a spot.

Entries must be delivered Sunday, Dec. 15, between 10 and 11 a.m. to the Cedar Hills Crossing interior mall area at 3205 S.W. Cedar Hills Blvd., in Beaverton.

There is a suggested $10 donation to the shelter with each entry.

This year’s theme is “Home for the Holidays.” Judging categories are youths (12 and under), teens (13-19), adults (20 and over), pet business/organization, culinary students and culinary professionals.

Entries will be available to the public for viewing Dec. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m. A People’s Choice Award will also be given to the house that receives the most donations.

A selection of entries will be on display inside the mall for the remainder of December.

Complete contest details are available at or by calling Jennifer Keene at 503-846-7141.

Donations from the contest will help the shelter care for the animals that are dreaming of their homes.

The Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter (along with Washington County Animal Services) cares for lost animals, finds homes for abandoned pets, licenses dogs and enforces animal cruelty laws.

The shelter is located at 1901 S.E. 24th Ave. in Hillsboro.
