Clinic geared to low-income patients

A new clinic designed to provide health care services for low-income, uninsured individuals, opened its doors Monday, Dec. 9.

The Southwest Community Health Center, at 266 W. Main St. in Hillsboro, provides walk-in urgent care services at the site of the former Essential Health Clinic facility.

Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. every Monday.

The clinic is operated by the Southwest Community Health Center, a Portland non-profit that operates a similar clinic at 7754 S.W. Capitol Highway in Portland.

The Hillsboro clinic will operate on a sliding fee scale based upon monthly income and family size. Patients will be accepted regardless of ability to pay.

Southwest Community Health Center was established in 2005 to provide basic health services, including acute care, chronic disease management and preventive care.

The new clinic’s predecessor, Essential Health Clinic, closed in the summer of 2013. That clinic had provided free medical care in Hillsboro for 12 years.

Funding is provided by numerous health care organizations, including Tuality Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, Legacy Health System, Providence Health System, Washington County Public Health Division and the Collins Foundation.
