A Hillsboro-based imaging systems company has purchased an international conglomerate that provides equipment and services to oil and gas companies.

FEI Co. designs, manufactures and supports a broad range of high-performance microscopy solutions.

On Feb. 5, it announced the acquisition of Lithicon of Trondheim, Norway and Canberra, Australia.

Lithicon provides digital rock technology services and pore-scale micro computed tomography equipment to oil and gas companies worldwide.

“This will significantly accelerate the growth of our served available market,” said Don Kania, president and CEO of FEI.

“After learning more about FEI, its strengths and its plans, we are convinced of the synergies they will provide,” said Lithicon Chairman Terje Eidesmo.

Before the acquisition, FEI had more than 2,600 employees and sales and service operations in more than 50 countries around the world.

The purchase price of $68 million. It was paid for with funds from FEI’s European operations.
