A taste of the tropics is coming to downtown Hillsboro, but those exotic tastes will emerge from ingredients found right here in Oregon.


Jessica and Danny Hart are opening Manaia, a coffee-house-meets-traditional-Samoan-food establishment on the corner of Main Street and Second Avenue.

Hart’s mother-in-law, To’a McMoore, will be using family recipes that have been passed down for generations — chicken, ribs and potato salad, to name a few. They eatery will also serve Longbottom coffee, Tillamook ice cream, smoothies, island-themed drinks, desserts and gluten- and dairy-free food options.

All the fixings, including meat and produce, will be purchased locally, according to the Harts.

Manaia — which means “delightful” or “delicious” in Samoan — is only a block away from Starbucks, but it will be a far different business model, Jessica Hart said.

“It’s going to be really personable,” she said. “We’re excited to bring another place to Hillsboro where people can come and relax.”

There will be a kids’ corner with a book shelf, live music on the weekends and a comfortable atmosphere meant to invite customers to lounge around, said Hart, whose first job was at Starbucks.

Hart has always wanted to open a coffee shop. The Hilhi graduate grew up working in her dad’s businesses, including the Laurel Store and Hillsboro Mini Mart. “He’s an entrepreneur and was always a part of the community,” Hart said.

The Harts are hoping to open March 31, with 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours except for Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, when they’ll stay open until 9:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be a ‘coffee house environment meets tropical environment,’” Hart said. “People can come by, relax and hang out.”
