Salmonberry group delays its meeting

The Salmonberry Coalition was scheduled to meet in Banks Friday, April 11, at the Banks Fire Hall, but those plans have changed.

“The April 11 Salmonberry Coalition meeting in Banks is being postponed,” said Rocky Houston, state trails coordinator for Oregon State Parks. “We need more time to consider what we heard at the last round of public meetings, and to solicit more feedback from stakeholders. The coalition will meet again in June.”

The Salmonberry Coalition’s is working on an update of the master planning process, an update on grant applications and has been reviewing a list of potential partners’ projects that could serve as catalyst projects.

The Salmonberry Coalition is a steering committee involving public and private partners. The committee is working with the Port of Tillamook Bay and local government and elected leaders to make recommendations on re-linking the communities along the railroad corridor from Banks to Tillamook. Portions of the railroad were severely damaged in a December 2007 storm, and in the aftermath most of the rail line was taken out of service.

Under consideration are proposals to convert the no longer functional portions of the rail line into a hiking, biking and equestrian trail, as well as adding a trail adjacent to the viable sections of rail between Tillamook and Enright.

“This unique, 86-mile recreational opportunity, steeped in history, natural beauty and adventure, can connect urban and rural Oregon — the Portland area to the coast — while tapping into a wide network of existing recreational trails and facilities, educational opportunities and heritage sites,” said Houston.
