City slates April 23 open house near school

City of Hillsboro public works staff will be on hand from 5 to 7 p.m. April 23 at W.L. Henry Elementary School to share information and answer questions on a proposed sidewalk improvement project near the school.

The project will include sidewalk improvements along Southeast 24th Avenue between Maple and Alder and on Southeast Alder between 24th and 25th Court.

Under the proposal, crews would construct sidewalks on both sides of the streets.

City project engineer Amica Bose said more than 200 students walk to W.L. Henry Elementary School and adding sidewalks will allow safer accesss to the school along residential streets.

Latino culture is focus of PCC’s Semana de la Raza

Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus will host the eighth annual Semana de la Raza (“Week of the people”) from April 21 to 25 at the Event Center, Building 9, 17705 N.W. Springville Road.

This event, which has a theme this year of “El color de la vida” or “the color of life,” is the college’s annual celebration of Latino culture with a week-long schedule of workshops, speakers and entertainment. It is free and open to the public.

Semana de la Raza begins with its kickoff day from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, April 21, featuring live music from the Tom Bergeron Brasil Band (11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and Los Dos de Atarés (2 to 3 p.m.), as well as food from La Taqueria Hermanos Ochoa’s. From 3 to 4 p.m., organizers will show clips from Mexican television series “El Chavo Del Ocho,” followed by a brief discussion of the show’s cultural impact. Other highlights include journalist Todd Miller’s talk from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, about his new book, “Border Patrol Nation,” which documents how Border Patrol and immigration enforcement has dramatically expanded inward in the country over the last several years. On Thursday, April 24, the week closes with the Cesar Chavez Distinguished Service Awards and Reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, visit pcc.edu/semana or call 971-722-7279.

Historical Society announces book contest

Think you’ve got what it takes to design book covers?

Oregon and southwest Washington middle and high school students are invited to try their hand at designing a cover for the Oregon Historical Society Book Cover Design Contest. To enter, students must send a high-resolution PDF of their book cover to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. A book title and “blurb” of 75 words or fewer must accompany the design, and should describe the imagined story and its link to Oregon history. Students must include their name, contact information, school and grade level in their email submission.
