TriMet names Chief Operating Officer as finalist to run agency
TriMet's Board of Directors has named current Chief Operating Officer Doug Kelsey as the single finalist in the search for a new general manager.
The public will have an opportunity to comment on the decision at the board's next meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 24. Kelsey will also answer questions from the public at the meeting.
After that, the board convene a special meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 31. At that time, the directors will either authorize the board chair to negotiate a contract with Kelsey or choose to continue the general manager search.
Current General Manager Neil McFarlane announced his upcoming retirement late last year. He brought Kelsey to TriMet in late 2015 from TransLink, the regional transportation authority in the Vancouver, B.C. metro area.
An international search to replace McFarlane was announced shortly after he announced his upcoming retirement. It included interviews that narrowed the candidates down to Kelsey. The other finalists have not been named.
The next board meeting will be held at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 24, at World Trade Center 2, Plaza Conference Room, 121 S.W. Salmon, Building 2 in Portland.
Kelsey served in many capacities at TransLink, including Chief Operating Officer. He also led subsidiary British Columbia Rapid Transit Company Ltd. as President and General Manager, was President of subsidiary Coast Mountain Bus Company and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of subsidiary West Coast Express.
According to TriMet, after Kelsey came to the agency, he quickly improved the overall on-time performance of the transit system, putting the agency on a strategic path for long-term success.
