Man charged with sexually assaulting horse near Hillsboro
Washington County sheriff's deputies have arrested a 20-year-old man after he allegedly sexually assaulted a horse on a farm outside of Hillsboro.
Kenneth Lijah Duyck, a transient who frequents the Cornelius and Forest Grove area, was arrested Monday, April 24. Duyck faces charges of second-degree burglary, sexual assault of an animal and violating his parole.
Deputies were called to a home in the 200 block of Northwest 334th Avenue outside of Hillsboro on April 19 after a homeowner reported that someone had broken into her horse stables. According to Det. Mark Povolny with the Sheriff's Office, the woman told police she had gone out to the stables and discovered one of her horses, a black mare named Ellie, was found tied up in a way that the woman hadn't left it. Other items in the stable appeared to have been moved, she said. Nothing appeared to have been stolen.
A veterinarian examined the animal and told deputies that the horse had likely been assaulted, Povolny said.
Neighbors and the homeowner were able to provide investigators information about the suspect, Povolny said, and Duyck was arrested Monday, April 24.
Povolny said Duyck was known to frequent that area.
"He has some family in that area," Povolny said.
Duyck was arraigned April 25 in Washington County Circuit Court.
According to court records, Duyck was on probation at the time of his arrest. Duyck was convicted last year of burglary and theft charges after he broke into his uncle's home in Forest Grove and stole a handgun in 2015. Duyck was initially found unfit to stand trial in that case and was moved to the Oregon State Hospital in Salem for treatment for several months until he was able to aid in his own defense.
Sexual abuse of an animal is a Class C felony. If convicted, Duyck faces five years in prison and up to $125,000 in fines for the crime.
Editor's note: A previous version of this post misspelled the Washington County Sheriff's Office spokesman's surname. His name is Mark Povolny.
