The serious-injury crash occurred Friday morning, May 4, in the intersection of Tualatin Valley Highway and Century Boulevard.

FILE PHOTO - this is a stock photoA school bus carrying students from Rosedale Elementary School in Hillsboro hit an 84-year-old woman on Friday morning, May 4, as it carried students to school.

The woman, Mary A. Berg of Hillsboro, is a resident of Rosewood Park Retirement and Assisted Living Residence, located a block from the site of the incident.

Berg was sent to Oregon Health & Science University hospital with serious injuries. Her injuries are not suspected to be life threatening, according to Berg's family, but she remains in the trauma unit.

No students were injured in the crash.

Officers were called to the intersection of Southeast Tualatin Valley Highway and Century Boulevard in Hillsboro at about 7:47 a.m., May 4, according to the Hillsboro Police Department.

The school bus struck Berg as she was crossing in a marked crosswalk. The bus was turning left from southbound Century Boulevard onto eastbound Tualatin Valley Highway. The left turn signal was green, according to police spokesman Eric Bunday.

"The determination was that the pedestrian just literally walked out into the crosswalk (in front of the bus), which had the right of way," he said.

The driver of the school bus will not receive any citations, Bunday said.

Mike Strande, the principal of Rosedale Elementary School sent an email and letter home to parents following the incident.

"I wanted to let you know that a bus carrying students to our school was involved in an accident with a pedestrian this morning," he wrote. "All students on the bus were safe, but the pedestrian was transported to the hospital. We are unsure of her current condition. All parents of those students were called as soon as possible about the accident, and those students had access to both our school counselor and additional counselors who have special training in crisis response."

A different bus was sent to the scene to transport the students involved to the school, according to the principal's statement.

Tualatin Valley Highway was closed for about an hour while officers investigated. The investigation is ongoing.

Editor's note: This story has been updated with information on the students and quotes from the principal. This stroy has been updated to include the name of the pedestrian as well as information on citations for the incident.
