Local food store still in the works
Organizers are still trying to start up a community-owned cooperative grocery store in Hillsboro.
Organizers of the Hillsboro Food Co-op have outlined their goals: to provide healthy, high-quality, affordable food to Hillsboro and its surrounding area; serving as a community gathering place; providing products from local, sustainable and socially responsible sources; and building connections between customers, farmers and other local suppliers.
Hillsboro Food Co-op has been incorporated with the state, and organizers are raising funds to cover an estimated $2,500 in legal expenses related to adopting bylaws and preparing to launch an ownership drive. Currently, more than 10 percent of the funds have been raised.
Once the money has been secured, organizers can begin an ownership drive, conduct a feasibility study, and plan for the opening. Volunteers wanting to assist in the start-up process are still needed as well.
Theres also an ongoing logo contest open to the public. Entries are due Sunday, Dec. 15.
