Variety is spice of BodyVox-2 life

A new troupe from the internationally recognized BodyVox contemporary dance company in Portland will perform at the Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro next weekend, offering upbeat entertainment for all ages.by: PHOTO COURTESY OF WALTERS ARTS CENTER - BodyVox-2 features athletic young dancers who use music, theater and film to add humor and grace to their performances.

BodyVox-2 is an emerging group of young performers under the direction of veteran BodyVox performer Zachary Carroll. It condenses a large-scale performance to accommodate smaller performing arts centers, harmonizing the skills of five dancers who are experienced in tap, gymnastics and ballet into a performance incorporating dance, music (ranging from classical to pop) and film footage from throughout Oregon.

Seasoned dance instructors Ashley Roland and Jamey Hampton believe where we live justifies how art and dance change, and use this idea to create a unique performance.

“BodyVox-2 is a rare dance experience,” said BodyVox general manager Una Loughran. “Audiences will leave smiling and laughing at the light-hearted, humorous entertainment the performance offers.”

While preparing for their performances, the dance troupe also gives back to local schools through a community outreach program . Through the viewpoint of dance, the troupe helps students learn about plants, the solar system and even physics. By participating in community advancement, the troupe hopes to enrich school districts and exemplify a different way of learning. In the Hillsboro School district, the dance troupe has visited Lincoln, Free Orchards and Tobias Elementary schools.

Walters Cultural Arts Center program supervisor Bridie Harrington is excited to have the BodyVox Company reaching out to audiences in Washington County.

“Hosting BodyVox-2 is an example of how we work every day to bring world class art and music to our community. We want citizens to know that there is a great time to be had, right here in Hillsboro,” said Harrington.

For the performances next Friday and Saturday, the arts center and dance company negotiated reduced ticket prices, Harrington said.

Loughran predicts those who come will enjoy themselves. “I feel confident that the audience will have an uplifting, wonderful time at the show,” she said. “BodyVox-2 is a sophisticated and whimsical multi-layer performance that engages all ages.”
