Independent publishing conference coming to Washington County

The Northwest Independent Writers Association will be hosting its first annual symposium on independent publishing Feb. 1-2. The symposium will include a weekend of networking, learning and navigating in the new era of independent publishing. The conference will be held at McMenamins Grand Lodge, 3505 Pacific Ave. in Forest Grove.

Writing, publishing and marketing will be among the topics covered.

STAGES offers

kids class

STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy is offering Kids on Stage, a class for third- through sixth-graders who are new to performing. Youngsters will learn about character development, staging, singing, dancing and learning to work with others.

The classes are Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 27 to March 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be a public performance March 14. Register at

HACC opens 2014-15 grant cycle

The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) is now accepting applications for 2014-15 Community Arts & Culture Grants.

Grant funding is offered to organizations that provide arts and culture programming for Hillsboro.

Over the past six years, the HACC has given out more than $135,000, used to support programs that strengthen community outreach through the arts.

Nonprofit arts and culture organizations that serve Hillsboro are eligible for funding through this grant program, but other organizations with an arts and culture component or partner could also qualify.

All applications are due by 5 p.m. on March 28.

Proposals can include, but are not limited to:

Community performances, exhibits, art tours or festivals;

Youth arts programming, including out-of-school opportunities;

Increased access to arts and culture for underserved populations;

Support for performing arts programming and expansion;

Capacity building, such as developing a strategic or business plan for your organization;

Technical assistance, including website development, ticketing systems, and graphic design;

Enhanced marketing and communication goals, including development and production of print materials, e-marketing campaigns, and consultant fees.
