For a first go at organizing an authors' conference, Writers in the Grove, a creative writing group in Forest Grove, has brought together a veritable "Who's Who" in the Oregon literary arts world.
The event is set for Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Forest Grove Senior and Community Center.
"This writing conference is a fundraiser for the Forest Grove senior center," said author and organizer MaryJane Nordgren. "This is a win-win event, supporting both the FGSCC and area writers."
A series of seminars will help budding writers advance their skills — helping them move from first draft to published author.
Deborah Reed, who holds a master of fine arts degree in creative writing from Pacific University, will be the keynote speaker. Reed has authored four novels and two thrillers under the pen name Audrey Braun. She is is co-director of the Black Forest Writing Seminars at the University of Freiburg in Germany.
"We have the esteemed, award-winning poet and former Oregon poet laureate Paulann Petersen presenting an afternoon poetry workshop," Nordgren said.
In addition, Holly Lorincz, Chip MacGregor, Jessica Morrell, Kristin Thiel and Nordgren will speak on topics including preparing manuscripts, pitching stories, developing a character arc, pitfalls of common editing errors and writing hooks.
Optional private consultations and a small group session are also available during the day. Sign up on a first-come, first-served, paid-at-the-door basis to meet with Morrell, Lorincz or Thiel.
Morrell will be assisting with memoir or fiction and Lorincz will be available to talk through a story idea, plot points and non-fiction scope and sequence. Thiel will run a 45-minute session for practice pitching stories.
All levels of writers are welcome.
Forest Grove's senior center has been the group's home base for several years. "It seemed appropriate for us to try to raise funds for the senior and community center. I am overwhelmed by people's generosity for a good cause," Nordgren said.
Proceeds will help the FGSCC update its kitchen.
