by: HILLSBORO TRIBUNE: DAVID BALL - Hillsboro center Tarea Green faces the basket during the second half of the teams 52-45 win over Gresham last week. GRESHAM — The Hillsboro girls basketball team opened the season with a 52-45 comeback win at Gresham on Thursday night.

The Spartans overcame a 17-point first-half deficit to earn the victory, starting their charge back late in the first half when Sorain Dy intercepted a pass and fed the ball to Shariah Green for an easy two under the basket to bring the team within 34-23 at halftime.

Gresham appeared to regain control when Irene Medina swiped a steal and scored on a breakaway four seconds into the second half.

But Hillsboro pounded the ball inside to the 6-foot-4 Tarea Green to collapse the Gophers’ lead. Green hit a turnaround jumper from the left side, then swished another shot from the other side of the lane. Moments later, she grabbed an offensive rebound, fought off a defender and lifted a shot over the front of the rim.

In a matter of minutes, the lead was down to five points.

Gresham doubled the margin back to 43-33 after Ali Rojas connected on a 3-pointer, but the Gophers would only managed one more basket over the game’s final 12 minutes.

Hillsboro closed in early in the fourth quarter when Tarea Green went above two Gophers to pull down a rebound and twisted her body to send a long throw down the center of the court. Dy caught up to the ball at the far end for a fastbreak layin.

Green followed with two points of her own on the team’s next possession to tie the score.

The Spartans moved in front to stay 45-43 when Cheyanne Seeley dribbled down the middle of the lane, got past a fallen defender and continued to the front of the rim for two points.
