Liberty wins third golf tournament

There seems to be no stopping the Liberty girls golf team.

The Falcons picked up their second team victory in Northwest Oregon Conference play as well as their third overall on Tuesday at Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City. Racking up 196 points in the modified stableford scoring system, Liberty beat Wilsonville by 23 points. Sandy and Sherwood tied for third place with 145 points.

“This is the kind of day we need to have for golf all the time,” Falcons coach Stuart Kivett said. “The weather was ideal, it was so nice. The girls loved it. It was just such a different change from last week.”

Liberty also went 1-2 in the individual standings for the second consecutive week. Stephanie Miller backed up her win from last week with another one Tuesday, scoring 61 points to top teammate McKenzie Oster, who posted a 56. Wilsonville’s Kaitlyn Howe took third with 55 points.

“She is very excited,” Kivett said of Miller. “She’s playing extremely consistently. It’s very exciting to watch her play.”

The Falcons also got contributions from Elaina Maki and Netianah Northcutt, the team’s rapidly improving freshman. Northcutt has scored more points each tournament this spring, and she scored a 46 at Stone Creek.

“It’s really exciting to see a freshman grow like that and start to really feel like she’s contributing,” Kivett said.

Northcutt also added a near hole-in-one at the sixth hole. Kivett said her first shot finished less than a couple of feet to the side of the hole. Maki scored 33 after posting a 20 last week.

Another Liberty freshman, Lorrin Santoro, scored a 9.

Next week’s girls NWOC tournament is slated to take place at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg, a course Kivett billed as one of the most difficult in the state.

Century AD wins statewide award

Century athletic director Kris Welch has been selected for a statewide award.

Last month, Welch was announced as the Class 6A athletic director of the year by the Oregon Athletic Directors Association. Along with the chosen award winners in the state’s other classifications, Welch will be honored at the OADA state conference, scheduled for Monday in Sunriver.

Award winners in the other classifications were Ron Molony, Mohawk; Kevin Moffatt, Kennedy, Ron Miller, Blanchet Catholic; Jason Boyd, Seaside; and Dennis Burke, Wilsonville.

At that conference, the state athletic directors of the year for Class 1A through 3A and Class 4A through 6A will be announced. For more information, go to oadaonline.org or contact Dave Hood at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
