This season has supplied plenty of highlights so far for the Hillsboro Hops, but a lowlight did occur off the field recently.

Just a few days after having been named the Northwest League pitcher of the week, Anderson Placido was released from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization after valuables from a teammate were found in Placido’s belongings Saturday during the team’s recent road trip to Boise, which wrapped up that same day.

“It’s unfortunate,” Hops manager J.R. House said Monday. “He has past history in similar situations like this.”

The Oregonian first reported the incident on Sunday, noting that a Hops player reported to House during the trip that valuables were gone from his locker. After House questioned Placido, the valuables were found in Placido’s belongings.

House reported the incident to the Diamondbacks front office, he said, and while he awaited word for instruction, Placido accompanied the team on the bus back to Hillsboro after the three-game series. House received word that the decision had been made to release Placido, who was put on a plane back to his native Dominican Republic.

A 20-year-old lefthander, Placido had previously been released from the Cleveland Indians organization for similar reasons, House said. Prior to that release, Placido went 6-1 and sported a 1.97 earned run average.

“This was a second chance for him,” House said. “As far as the Diamondbacks, we’re big into second chances, but you can’t be burned.”

Placido had gotten off to a 2-0 start this season with a 2.35 ERA over 15.1 innings before his release. His 12-strikeout effort at Everett on June 15 was part of what earned him the first league pitcher of the week honor of the season.

Austin Platt was bumped down from South Bend, Arizona’s Class A affiliate, to fill up the hole in Hillsboro’s rotation. He started Monday’s game against Everett and gave up just one run in four innings, though the Hops eventually lost 5-4 after allowing one run in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth.
